Dear Fr. Suson:

We appreciate much the time and energy that Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas -Eastern Visayas (KBP-EV) has been doing in the past for the protection and advancement of the press freedom guaranteed by the 1987 Philippine Constitution. We know that the freedom of the press along with the basic civil liberties – freedom of expression and of assembly are the manifestations that we are living a democratic institution.

However, we are alarmed by the fact that a block-time program from you station along with its hosts and guests are airing unfounded statements and deliberate lies – as in the case of the airing of unheard of issue – “the death of around forty students from the University of the Philippines (UP) and University of Eastern Philippines (UEP)”. This statement is just an example of how the “Tribune ha Diwa” tackles socio-economic issues, and we feel this as an encroachment if not a deliberate attack to the “press freedom” considering that this statements are uttered by the military men and their hosts. Moreover, the statement is an assault to the good name of the University of the Philippines (UP) as a premiere state university and bastion of campus and academic freedom we have struggled for throughout the years.

We are also alarmed by the information that military men are campaigning for listernership of this program at gunpoint in hinterland barangays and are prohibiting peasants to listen to another program by the Promotion of Church People’s Response in Eastern Visayas (PCPR-EV) which is also aired in the same radio station.

In this connection, we appeal that you reprimand, if not to fully prohibit Marlon Taño and Babes Adona, as well as the block-time program “Tribune ha Diwa” from broadcast, for this assault. Please remind them to avoid issuing unfounded/baseless statements as it is a contravention to the “Journalists’ Code of Ethics”.

A program like “Tribune ha Diwa” maligns the name of the media profession and practitioners as well as puts the ‘Fourth State” in danger.

Yours truly,
